THE smell of freshly baked bread is in the air around Begonia, after ladies from the area spent last week learning the finer techniques of sourdough bread making.
Funded through Care Balonne's Drought Relief Fund, the two-day workshop was filled with laughter and a lot of bread eating.
Host Belinda Gordon said it was a good opportunity for ladies to get together.
"The workshop has been a wonderful boost to morale for people living out here, we have all had great fun learning how to make the sourdough and the processes involved,” Mrs Gordon said.
Ten women learnt to prepare their dough from scratch, a process, according to participant Vicky Priest, which involved tasting every aspect. "We learnt how to make the starter for the dough before the long process in which we had to stretch the dough every half hour for three hours,” Mrs Priest said.
"Now we have an idea of what is going on, it is an easy process, and one I would definitely try it at home,” she said.
One of bakers, Margie Fox, said she couldn't wait to experiment now she knew what she was doing.
"We have the basics now, so we can explore by adding in extras.
"I would like to try an olive loaf and perhaps a fig and cranberry soughdough as well,” Mrs Fox said.
"Thank you to our teacher, Michelle Demchenko, and to Care Balonne for making it happen,” Mrs Gordon said.
