Fish in flood waters off hook, $1000 fine for filming driving

WHILE police and emergency services are urging residents to steer clear of flood waters, they have made one exception.

In the months since Murray the Cod sculpture was installed on the St George riverbank, he has been left high and dry.

And, while Murray the Cod was let off the hook for frolicking in the flood waters, police have cracked down on a number of humans doing the wrong thing.

"Police have issued infringement notices to people for having unrestrained children in the car; $1000 fine to a person driving and recording with phone; disobeying a no entry sign; and a driver for allowing a passenger to not wear a seat belt, and the passenger was fined as well," Cr Marsh said.

"All these people were locals which is very disappointing, but on the whole the police have commended the community for their positive outlook."

When the Balonne River peaked in the town this morning as 12.22m, residents were on hand to watch the water lap along the belly of the fish sculpture.

Designed and installed by Dion Cross, the sculpture has been a fixture of the riverbank and is a celebration of the town's fishing history.

The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed that the river had peaked this morning, but water levels would remain high into the weekend.

Balonne Shire mayor Richard Marsh confirmed the Andrew Nixon Bridge would remain closed until a later date.

"The river level will be above the height of the bridge for a number of days, and residents are urged to obey all road rules while driving around town," he said.
