More than 4000 jobs disappear from CQ mines, says CFMEU

MINING union figures show more than 4000 jobs have been shed at Central Queensland mines since 2012.

A CFMEU spokesman said a total of 4656 jobs had been cut in that time.

The highest number of cuts were at BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA)'s Goonyella Mine, with 783 jobs shed, followed by 601 cuts at Glencore's Collinsville Mine.

CFMEU said there were more than 200 jobs cut at Peabody's Burton Mine, Anglo American's Capcoal Surface Coal Mine, BHP BMA's Daunia, Saraji, Norwich Park and Peak Downs mines and BHP Mitsui Coal's South Walker Creek Mine.

A Glencore spokesman said the Collinsville mine figure was inaccurate.

He said since 2013, across Glencore's five Queensland coal mines (Rolleston, Clermont, Oaky Creek, Newlands and Collinsville), a total of 900 jobs had been cut.

Glencore took over operations at Clermont Coal Mine mid-2014.

The CFMEU report showed 337 jobs had been shed at that mine since 2012.

"It's important to understand that Glencore continues to be one of the biggest employers in the Bowen Basin, with a workforce of around 2850 people," the Glencore spokesman said.

"We appreciate that market conditions have resulted in ongoing uncertainty for our workforce, but we aim to provide our people with as much notice and information as we can before any changes are made."

Queensland Resources Council chief executive Michael Roche said job losses were reflective of the fact the mining sector was "in the midst of its worst cyclical downturn in decades".

"All up, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, employment in mining and resources in Queensland has fallen by 23,000 from the peak in November 2013," he said.

"We're glad to see some good news starting to appear for the Bowen Basin including Stanmore Coal's Isaac Plains mine reopening last week and news of two potential projects west of Nebo."

Spokespersons from BHP BMA (Goonyella Riverside, Daunia, Peak Downs, Saraji), BHP Billiton Mitsui Coal (South Walker Creek and Poitrel mines) and Anglo American (Capcoal Surface Coal Mine (Old German Creek)) declined to comment.
