Table 19 (M)

Director: Jeffrey Blitz (Rocket Science)

Starring: Anna Kendrick, Lisa Kudrow, Stephen Merchant, Tony Revolori, Craig Robinson.

Rating: Two-and-a-half stars

A so-so wedding-themed tale of woe, Table 19 is an American comedy that tries valiantly to deliver more than it is ultimately capable of.

Anna Kendrick (Picture Perfect) plays Eloise, who has tumbled far out of favour at a friend's wedding.

How far? Well, there was a point where she was the official maid of honour. Then she broke up with her boyfriend, who held his position in the official party as best man.

Now Eloise finds herself seated at that dreaded table - there's one at every reception - where all the exiles and misfits that must be invited along are clumped together.

The awkward nature of the situation does have a lot of comic potential, and for a while it seems as if the movie is well on track to realise most of it.

Then Eloise and her eccentric entourage (which includes the guy who played the kid bellhop in Grand Budapest Hotel, the sweary granny from Nebraska, and Lisa Kudrow) go for a wander through the party venue, and the film absent-mindedly loses its way.

Some great one-off scenes almost turn everything around, as do the daft interjections of Stephen Merchant as a white-collar crook who is the blackest sheep of all present on the big day.
