Peter Pan brings Neverland to Roma

REACH FOR THE STARS: Brent Garvie and Sarah Hall bring the classic to life as Peter and Wendy.
REACH FOR THE STARS: Brent Garvie and Sarah Hall bring the classic to life as Peter and Wendy. Alexia Austin

THERE is something about the story of Peter Pan that can transport the viewer, taking you from Edwardian London to the open seas and then on to the jungles of Neverland as we become absorbed in the adventures of Peter, Wendy and the ragtag lost boys.

Ingrained in many of our upbringings, Peter Pan the musical has hit the stage at the Roma Community Centre, bringing a magical touch to the childhood classic.

The story follows Wendy Darling and her younger brothers, who are mesmerised by their parents' bedtime tales of pirates and far-away adventures.

Little do they know they are about to become the heroes of their own story, when Peter Pan flies into their nursery one night and leads them over the moonlit London rooftops to the lush jungles of Neverland.

Wendy and her brothers join Peter and the Lost Boys in an adventure of a lifetime, free to explore the island paradise, a place with no grown-up rules, with the exotic Tiger-Lily by their side.

However, danger is not far away. The formidable Captain Hook is out for revenge, determined to put an end to Peter Pan and the lost boys for good.

The Roma Performing Arts breathes new life into the magical tale, with fantastic set pieces, intricate costumes and joyous musical numbers sure to get everyone singing.

Brent Garvie takes the role of Peter Pan in his stride, bringing a loveable cheekiness to the character and perfectly complementing Sarah Hall's prim and proper portrayal of Wendy.

Jessica Selmes stuns as Captain Hook, planning mischief with her evil but loveable cronies Schmee and Starkey, while the lost boys give a convincing performance, narrowly evading the pirates at every turn.

The story has been wonderfully repurposed for the Roma stage by director Trent Sellers, with plenty of laughs, sword fights and a smart adaptation of fan-favourite Tick-Tock the Crocodile brought to life on the stage.

The musical is a must-see for both children and parents alike.

Catch all the fun at the Roma Community Centre, with shows at 7pm every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from August 11-19.

Tickets will be available at the door.
