Roma couple vows ‘Not even a virus can stop our love’
NEWLY introduced measures for public gatherings to contain the spread of the deadly coronavirus means Tara Lancaster and fiance Jason Blinco will begin married life with just two witnesses and a celebrant, all 1.5 metres apart.
The couple’s two children will not be able to watch their parents get married, a reality Ms Lancaster has described as “gut-wrenching”.
While the couple’s dream outdoor wedding will need to be put on hold for the foreseeable future, they’re adament they will still tie the knot.
“Originally we were talking about 150 people. When all this coronavirus stuff started happening we had to tell some of our elderly family members they couldn’t come,” Ms Lancaster said.
“I had to make the hard decision to ask my pop not to come, he is going through chemotherapy.
“Thankfully everyone was very understanding, a lot of people weren’t able to travel anyway.”
Last night, Scott Morrison further tightened social distancing measures to prevent further community transmission of COVID-19, including the way weddings were able to proceed.
From midnight tonight, couples wanting to get married can do so only in the company of their celebrant and two witnesses.
“We are still going to get married,” Ms Lancaster said.
“At this stage we will have the small, civil ceremony as stated by the government. Our celebrant at this stage is still eager to come out and marry us.
“And when this is all over we will have a mock ceremony and a big party.”
Ms Lancaster admitted she is one of the lucky ones – the money they had put down as a deposit for the venue, photographer, and caterer will enable them to have the ceremony of their dreams when the laws are lifted.
“I understand why this is all necessary. But my partner and I are just both so gutted we won’t be able to get married with our children there,” she said.
“We have spent money personally engraving items with the date.
“But more than that, us still getting married shows that no matter how bad things get, at least we’ve got each other.
“My partner and I have been through quite a bit, so this is our way of showing that not even a virus can stop our love.
“Despite everything that is going out, there are still reasons to smile and to find love.”
