Boyne Smelters in generous donation for local diggers

THE president of the Boyne-Tannum RSLA Sub-Branch Inc, Mr Jeff Tickner, has announced that the Gladstone Regional Council has given the Sub Branch conditional support-in-principle for the erection of four monuments on the entry path way to the cenotaph, Stirling Park, Boyne Island as a Centenary of ANZAC project.

These monuments, dedicated to the memory of all who have served in the Navy, Army, Air Force and the Australian Army Nursing Service, as representative of all women who have served, will be based on four machined pillars of solid aluminium 300mm in diameter, that have been generously donated by Boyne Smelters Limited.

He went on to say: "With approval in principle given the Sub-Branch is now working with a local artist to design and construct the monuments. Application for funding will be made through an appropriate grants scheme. Completion and unveiling should be completed on or before ANZAC Day 2017."

Mr Tickner said: "The Sub Branch believe the monuments will be major contribution to the cultural landscape of the Gladstone region as a unique display of aluminium sculpture that will draw wide interest when unveiled and have the potential to be a tourist attraction for the region."

Boyne-Tannum RSL Sub-Branch has a long term goal to turn Sterling Park into a dedicated memorial park with various monuments scattered around the park walkways commemorating military campaigns/events. An application has been made to the council to change the name of Sterling Park to Memorial Park.
