Swinging into summer

CRICKET: The weather is warming up, summer is almost here, and that means it's almost time to get out on the cricket pitch.

It's set to be a bumper season in the Charleville and District competition, which is welcoming seven teams from across the region.

Reigning champions Quilpie are back again, and so is Tambo, who are being considered a tour de force.

Charleville Railways captain Charlie Aitken said they would be up against stiff competition.

"Quilpie have won the last two years, so they're the ones to beat.

"But I think Tambo are up there as well, they've always been a pretty strong side.”

Railways is fielding a fairly new side this year, welcoming a number of newbies, and Mr Aitken said they were in it for a comeback.

"Last season Railways were the runners up; we lost in the last over when we were defending out total.

"Quilpie had five runs to get in the last over, and they did.

"Hopefully we might be able to back it up with a lot of new faces.”

A refreshed team is providing Railways with a mix of young and old, a combination that would see members learning from their teammates, Mr Aitken said.

"This year we have a slightly different team playing for railways.

"There are a couple of new faces and the team is a lot younger compared to the last few years.

"But we've still got a couple of old fellas floating about to help us young guys.

"I'd say we have a team that we can build up for the next couple of years to win another grand final.”
